SUCCESS STORY

Today’s success story character is Christopher Chandimaal Fernando from Sri Lanka. He graduated from RSMU and received a diploma in General Medicine in 2013.

- Currently I live in Sri Lanka and I work as an anesthetist in Neuro-surgical Department of the National Hospital of Sri Lanka.

Firstly, the main reason to choose medicine as a career was because of my late father, who was also a doctor that helped many sick people and saved many lives. Since I grew up I wanted to be just like him to help people with their diseases. However, not everyone can get in to medical school in Sri Lanka as it is a very competitive field. That’s why I chose RSMU. It gives everyone an equal opportunity to perceive their dream.

As an anesthetist I am proud and happy about the work I carry out. It can be hectic and stressful at times but what drives me is the excitement and experience my job gives me every day.

My journey began when I entered RSMU in 2007. After graduating in 2013 I took the medical license exam in my homeland Sri Lanka. In 2014 I passed the exam in the first attempt and ranked 19th. Later I completed my internship of one year and has been working in the government sector ever since.

At present I am in process of obtaining medical registration in the General Medical Council in hopes of migrating to the UK and continuing my medical journey into specialty training.

My advice for students would be to work hard towards your goals and the achievement you make will speak for itself.
